SCULLY, ARNIE, ELLIS, CHRIS, JOHAN, AND CHEMISTRY

Coen van Wyk

A valid question would be: what the heck is this Van Wyk "foefenjol" (to use an Afrikaans equivalent for: you know what) on about with a disjointed heading like SCULLY, ARNIE, ELLIS, CHRIS, JOHAN, AND CHEMISTRY. If, however, I add to the list, four Harvards, and three very cheeky Pitts Specials, then familiar images unfold and we deal with the chemistry set out in the following equation:

SPONSER+Scully+Ellis+Chris+Arnie+Johan+3Pitts+4Harvards = SHEER SPECTATOR ENJOYMENT

In the formula SPONSOR represents the provider of the necessary funds, and the rest of the items are the software and the hardware that produces the exciting results. The sponsor of the Pitts Special team is Shurlok, whereas Peugeot and Air BP sponsors the Harvard team, that is better known as the Peugeot-Air BP Flying Lions.

We are busy with a project aimed at bringing you more news and images of this exciting topic, the sponsors, the pilots, the aircraft and much more. The truly fascinating story of these aerobatics teams will therefore appear in a future edition of this magazine.

In the meantime we have some appetisers for you.

The image that follows was taken from the rear cockpit of a Pitts at the top of a loop, just before it accompanied its winged mates in a downward plunge that eventually culminated in the completion of the loop.

I apologise for the fact that the image is not available. It was sent through directly by the photographer (Frans Dely) to the magazien that published the article (SA Flyer).

The following images that reflect the Pitts chained together warrants some comment. Having done a fair amount (by the standards of the Shurlok ream, a minimal amount, actually, a microscopic amount) of formation flying, I find the chain thing particularly awesome. I say so for the following reasons:

·        To fly formation whilst the movements of the ships are limited by chains, already boggles the mind.

·        To do formation aerobatics with the same restrictions, boggles the whole anatomy, including the "hole" and some extremities.
